instead of going to google.com for searching things, go to
WWW.BLACKLE.COM
it is google, and it is made by google. it just has a darker screen, so it saves more energy!

This only saves power if you have an old, vacuum tube screen. Sorry.

This site is not made by Google and does not in fact saved energy at all.

If its something or somewhere local how about not even turning the computer on. There are still maps and a phone book (which of course you recycle each year if you get one)

I love this idea a lot! I just discovered blackle a few weeks ago but i did not know that it actually reduces energy! Great idea!

Maybe they should just post something at the beginning of the workshops, or in the suggest new challenge forum, stating "Blackle does NOT work for newer screens/monitors - stop suggesting it." By not working, I mean that only CRT screens would get any sort of energy savings by using a black screen. Try a different, greener search engine: here are a few of my suggestions at http://www.carbonrally.com/suggestions/3041
(You don't have to vote for my suggestion, but if you like them please leave a comment or suggest another search engine that could be used - I'm not trying to "steal votes.")

I often use forestle.org. With each search 0.1 m² of rain forest are saved. The organization uses advertising revenues to buy and protect rain forest land.

I can't estimate, but websearch itself, as I heard from my friend, consumes a lot of energy (which you don't pay, but is still relevant from the ecological point of view). Better think twice before searching with Google, Yahoo etc (while using one of them seems to be still better than meta search engines). For example, there is no reason to search for "twitter", "digg" or the like. In this case, simply put a button in your browser toolbar.

blackle is a good search engine.. but also goodsearch.com gives 1 cent to a charity everytime you search.

using Blackle does not save energy or carbon. only REALLY REALLY old computers (the big giant faded-yellow dinosaurs) use less energy to display a dark screen. Carbonrally has made a blog post about this because of all the people suggesting it. you can read it here: http://blog.carbonrally.com/2008/10/21/illuminating-blackle

Blackle doesn't even work. Even if it did the total energy savings from the thousands of people that have used blackle would only be 1,207 kwH. Since 1kWh translates to 1.55 lbs of CO2, saving 1,207 kWh saves just under a ton of CO2. Considering that the average American produces 24 tons of CO2 a year, Blackle's hypothetical benefits were little to begin with.

Hi, We've done some research on this, and found that Blackle only provides benefits for big CRT monitors, not the flat screens that most of us use. We posted some info about it "here":http://blog.carbonrally.com/2008/10/21/illuminating-blackle. Thanks.

Although that this is made with good intentions, what everyone else said is true. It DOES NOT decrease CO2 in LCD monitors, and in CRT monitors, The eyestrain can be stronger.

So I just went to blackle to see the about us, and the site was kinda based on an article about how, with the tight computer monitor, people might be able to save a little energy in google had a black screen... So this doesn't help much. Because it only saves some carbon if you have a CRT monitor, so even if it were as popular as google, it wouldn't make too much of an impact... But it was a good suggestion!
BAB1
just so all of you know: in most computers, a backlight is still running even if the screen is displaying something black. Therefore it uses just as much energy as it would with a white background.
Ice
I have to say this is actually pretty much useless. Using your computer wastes CO2 anyway.
Fractal
This doesn't work except if you have a CRT screen which you probably don't.
It gives a full explanation on Carbonrally blogs. Actually, Brighter screens use less energy than black screens. It's amazing but true.

wow, the four seconds i spend on google before going to another screen does not make a difference. besides a black screen still uses energy

Carbonrally has evaluated the CO2 associated with this idea, and unfortunately it doesn't eliminate alot of CO2 for users of LCD screens.

I would use blackle, but I much prefer goodsearch because I think the impact of donating to any charity you want is bigger than simply having a black background for a minute. Giving your computer a rest is a much more realistic way to reduce carbon emissions...

I've been very consciously using blackle, and just to make sure I'd have a similar effect even without blackle, I changed my laptop's wallpaper to black, and my PC at work. and I set my igoogle homepage to be mostly black.
Runetail

I totally support this one-until I read what other people said. So for carbon rally it wouldn't matter to most people but its better for ones eyes.
(I use this set as my home page to save power every time I open my browser (*Pout* guess that doesn't matter)and have a mostly black desktops.)

Blackle does not save any more energy than google does.
For earth day, google changed their screen to black, but in their information thing on the screen, they noted that a black screen doesn't actually do anything.
ELLa
BURN!!!!!!!!!
how do you know it doesn't work??
Black is not a light source (it doesn't reflect any light but rather absorbs it all), it is simply a name for the absence of light. Even though if it is used it will use carbon but I find that I spend less time on the Internet when I use it because I don't get distracted by ads or random results...
Mr Green Jeans
google actually went black for earth hour, but in their FAQs they stated that the reason they dont do it permanently is because it makes zero difference on an lcd screen, which most computers have. apparently, the monitors use the same amount of energy no matter what they are displaying. Hopefully that clears things up. Blackle is a neat idea, too bad it just doesnt work.
rjulian57
There're a few articles that contest the findings that using blackle will help anything. It seems if you're using a CRT monitor, then yes, it does save energy, whereas on some LCD monitors (which the majority of computer users have), it actually uses more energy than regular google.

You CAN add this to your Firefox search pulldown! The easiest way I found was to go to http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ and search for Blackle. Then, in the results, click on the Blackle link (looks like a link to the site but is actually a link to the search plugin). That will ask you if you want to install it. Works great!

would be nice if the firefox search engine list would allow for easy adding of http://www.blackle.com/
would be good to know how much of a difference it makes on an LCD monitor
