Actually, when you appropriately, the dishwasher saves much more water than washing dishes by hand. Just remember to toss the majority of the gunk into the trash/compost as necessary, do NOT pre-rinse, fill the dishwasher before using, and only use the minimum amount of washing detergents to clean the dishes – you can save more than twice the amount of water you use when washing dishes by hand.
