Fresh from a lovely homestead tour of the East Bay, I was offered free vegetable and flower seeds and cuttings by some very talented gardeners. This type of informal exchange could be organized via Craigslist or other community website.

"Gleaning" projects - harvesting backyard fruits and vegetables saves a lot of food from going to waste.

Eating close to home reduces your carbon footprint. Many folks cannot garden, many folks, particularly low income, could benefit from healthy, locally-grown produce that would otherwise go to waste.
