Wear your jeans at least twice before washing them.
74comments
Washing your clothes with excessive frequency uses your energy as well as energy from fossil fuels. It also ruins your clothing faster. As long as you wear underwear and wash those, what exactly are you afraid is happening to your pants every time you wear them? You will notice no difference and they won't smell bad.

I always wear my jeans a few times before throwing them in the washing machine, unless they get really dirty from food or whatever.

These people deserve to be an example. So many people without a disability but lazy to try. Should human beings like this, should feel ashamed when they read a very inspiring story like this. And not just stop there, but they soon change their attitude. Cotton Aprons in Bulk

"We are all artists. Every person is an artist. That is how I see it" I like this quote. Yea, everyone is an artist, unless for their own self. <a href="http://www.amerisleep.com/">memory foam mattress</a>, <a href="http://www.amerisleep.com/mattresses.html">mattress</a>, <a href="http://www.astrabeds.com/adjustable-beds.html">adjustable beds</a>

This is a very good challenge because I wash my clothes every 2 days unless they get REALLY dirty, which is rare.

I'm a kid so this isn't gross, but I wear my jeans even 3 to 4 times before washing, unless I have PE. That's a good challenge.

I've been doing this for a few years now - when my clothes do get get dingy from some (usually outdoor or grunt work-related) activity, then obviously they go in the wash. But often my clothes - jeans mostly, can be worn easily three, and occasionally four, times in a row before being washed. So, I have drastically cut down my laundry needs, and made my wardrobe smaller, by using four pairs of jeans and only needing to do laundry every two weeks - this is only my own laundry though, not the rest of my family.
I generally only have two or three loads of laundry, two for clothes, one of those mostly whites and (I know the idea might be shocking to some people, but...) the monthly cleaning of reusable pads, and the third, which I can do just once a month by changing my bedsheets every two weeks - though that is mostly in difference to the possibility of mites and pet dander than it actually being dirty.
The only things that absolutely must be changed all the time is underwear and socks (or if you have a serious b.o. problem, then also shirts) - Americans have become obsessed with cleanliness. Unfortunately, overdoing the cleanliness can negatively impact the health of the planet, and the health of the human, because humans need to have contact with bacteria and the like in order to have a strong immune system. Finding the right balance is vital, and this simple idea helps tons.
I recommend that this be promoted - it can be measured, I think, by cutting out at least one load of laundry (for every four, to be generous) every two weeks for a single person; one load from every four loads for an average-sized family every week (hey, I do recall what it was like as a kid - we're darn messy and that makes it more difficult.)
Measured like this should make it easier to get this promoted now, shouldn't it?

this is great, i do that with my sweaters too, i wear them 2-3 times before washing them. ofcourse i dont wear them 2-3 days in a row, so i hang them up and give them a chance to air out, which also helps the smell...

I do this already and I just alternate my jeans. If I wore some on Monday then the next time I wear them might be Wednesday or even later in the week. I've noticed that I can wait longer in between loads of laundry and my clothes last longer!

Your jeans won't smell, the won't look disgusting (unless you roll around in the dirt or something...) and it'll be just like it was before.

I wash my laundry (pants and shirts) once every two weeks and before that I lived in a house where the dryer did not work so I hung up all of my clothing on a clothes line outside! I recently found this website and I love it!

Ya I like this one! It's really simple and super easy to do, most people already do! Make sure it's clear that you are using the washer less, not just having lighter loads! I agree, a bit more than just twice!

I've never even thought about this before, for some reason. It is pretty strange, considering half the time, I just sit around doing nothing so I doubt my clothes are dirty. But I think in college I'll probably start wearing my clothes more to avoid doing unnecessary laundry, haha.
thejessman
forget just counting the two times, give the clothes a stink test (you know, take a whiff, if you gag, it needs to be washed), if you're a fairly clean person and use deodorants, you can get plenty of use out a pair of pants before you wash it, and two or three times for each shirt

Title suggestions: "Space-out the Laundry," "Less Laundry Day," "Wear Twice Then Wash."
Refinement suggestions: To make people more willing to follow and make it easier, define categories of clothing and suggest these could go for two-three wearings between washes. I like that the challenge specifies jeans already. Other things that could be included: Casual t-shirts, skirts, classy tops worn to work (unless you sweat at work)...
It is not very easy to quantify this challenge. I guess we could start with an assumption of how many items of clothing go to wash every week and how many items make one load. Then see about reducing the former in order to reduce the latter.
Withoutlove7_54650

I think this a good idea but agree with changing the title. If the clothes are not visibly dirty or stink why wash them. Think of what matters more the environment or not wearing clothes unless they have just been washed.
LeslieW

I would vote for this as a challenge if the title were amended to something along the lines of: WASH YOUR CLOTHES (AND TOWELS) ONLY WHEN VISIBLY SOILED OR SMELL BAD.
