Challenge Details

 • In Japan, 15% of commuters bicycle to work. In the Netherlands, 50% of commuters bicycle to work. Less than 2% of U.S. commuters bicycle to work.
 • The average person loses 13 pounds of body weight during their first year of commuting by bike.
 • The average car owner spends about $10,000 each year on car-related expenses. A bike’s upkeep is almost nothing.

Do you really need encouragement to ride a bike? Isn’t that something any child knows is one of life’s simple joys? Well, as obvious as that may be, that’s what we’re doing in this Challenge. We’re asking you to park your car and ride a bike to work or school. So, go on. Tell the world that you’re doing it to reduce your carbon footprint. Tell your friends that you’re doing it to get healthy. We won’t tell anyone you’re doing it for fun.

This challenge was originally inspired by a suggestion from Alexiz. Several other rallyers have posted similar ideas that have been very popular in the workshop. Check-out the high scoring ideas from: soxrox 101, XCrunner, Alim, and H2O Marc.

The Carbon Connection
Each gallon of gasoline burned in an average car’s engine blows 19.4 pounds of CO2 out the exhaust and directly into Earth’s atmosphere. The less we drive, the less gasoline we burn. When you ride a bicycle or walk someplace instead of driving your car, you are keeping unnecessary greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.

Driving also costs money. At current national average gasoline prices ($2.45 per gallon of regular), choosing your bike over your car saves you about $3 per day, not including tolls, parking, and so on. With gas prices going up again, your savings will undoubtedly increase.

Getting It Done
You don’t need to overthink this one; just decide to give it a try. Start by making sure your bike is in good working condition. Check your bike helmet for a good fit. Plan a route that avoids heavy traffic, bad roads, and killer hills without adding too much distance to the trip. And allow yourself time to make the ride at your own pace.

Here are a few other things to think about when considering this Challenge:

 • Bike riding is a great way to get low-impact, aerobic exercise. For example, a 150-pound bike rider will burn around 430 calories for every 10 miles he rides.
 • Bike safe! You don’t have to wear spandex pants with a padded butt, but you do need to wear a properly-fitted bike helmet. Be smart about the hazards of the road, such as opening car doors, potholes, wet roads, and so on.
 • If you find you’re ready to ditch your car, you might want to follow the suggestions from our friends at Izzit Green and look into some cool commuting bikes.
 • You may be able to get a $20 per month benefit from your employer for using your bicycle to commute to and from work. Read more about the Bicycle Commuter Act at Treehugger and talk to your employer about having your company participate.

Do you already bike to work or school? How far do you go? Have you found a way to persevere in cold and rainy weather? Please share your thoughts, stories, and suggestions on biking with fellow Rallyers in the forum section below.

Rules of the Challenge
This Challenge asks you to leave your car at home and ride your bike to school or work for one day. By taking one car off the road for one day’s average commute, you will be saving an estimated 26 lbs of CO2. This Challenge is repeatable and can be accepted once per 48 hours.

Let’s start with the known or estimated numbers:

 • This Challenge gives you credit for the carbon savings realized by keeping your car off the road for one day of average commuting to work or school. According to a 2005 ABC News poll, the average daily commute is 16 miles each way to school or work. That’s 32 roundtrip commuting miles driven each day. source
 • The average American car used in commuting to work or school gets 23.9 miles per gallon of gasoline. source
 • Each gallon of gasoline burned by an automobile engine leads to the release of 19.4 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere. source

Now put all that together to get the following equation:

Equation

Riding your bike shows your commitment to preventing climate change. The more of us there are, the easier it will be for our communities to support new bike path projects or for businesses to support biking as a commuting choice for customers and employees. So, grab your bike helmet and hit the road, Rallyers.

I am really cranky that I can't take this challenge anymore. I ride my bike every day and there isn't even an option to choose five days in a row. Silly challenge for a serious bicycle commuter.

I recently moved to Japan and am the only teacher who bikes to work every single day, including rainy days.

You make a good point there. rallyer9815. I don’t actually bike to work, I don’t drive ether—seeing that I work from home, but I bike FOR work. I log anywhere from a 2 mi round trip to a 12 mi round trip almost every day. So when I averaged it all out (approx. 7.5 mi average per day) and applied your reasoning, I found that I should take this challenge once every 4 days. Make it 5 days just to be sure I get the full 32 miles logged. FSBO

Has no bike and has to foot it. Walking saves car mileage and human weight gain. You burn body fat and less car fumes/CO2. It is also free; try it. Expert Sports Picks

One great thing that has happened recently in New York is that the city has created thousands of miles of bike paths. It still isn't particularly easy navigating traffic, but its a lot safer than it was. And once you get out there, and up on the various bridges, it puts traveling underground or in a car to shame.
Ismar2030 over 1 year ago
I rode my bike to work today. I also take the metro, but that saves over 100 lbs of CO2. However, you can put me down for 26 lbs for now.

I'm jealous-I would love to ride bike places but it's not safe when you live in the country. Although I do see some people riding-the most important thing is to be safe-and it is totally not safe on winding roads.

Max at ENSO Bottles. I'm riding my bike to the office. It is only 3.7 miles each way but every bit helps. It was a beautiful Arizona morning when I rode in ...probably will be hot this afternoon.

I do not own a bicycle therefore I have started walking daily due to the nice weather. I saved quite a bit on the purchase of gas. I have even cut back on my daily car mileage. Exercise does the body good. Try it

I bike to school every day even though I live in Seattle, which is all hills, and I can't change gears (they're broken - the bike is ten years old and used to be my mom's). It's really fun because while everyone else at school is half asleep, my biking partner (who lives in my neighborhood) and I are wide awake and ready for whatever the day may hold.

Fellow ralliers, be sure to understand the math behind saving 26 lbs of CO2. It takes 32 miles of driving. If you bike less than that a day, you are not saving the CO2 you think. I live only 2.5 miles from my work, 5 miles a day; so takes me 6.5 days to get up to the 32 miles to save the CO2. So I should only sign up for this every 7 bike riding days.
paperandpencil over 2 years ago
I already try to ride my bike to school as much as I can(it's only a mile or two). Sometimes I need to bring something that I can't carry on my back, but I usually can do it at least a couple times a week. I'm also planning on riding my bike to where ever I go during the summer. Honestly, the only hard part is getting in the habit of it.
maryann over 2 years ago
I biked to work today, 13 miles each way. Great ride and same time as my normal commute (train). It was intimidating the first few times I tried this, but once you get to know the routes and trails it gets easy. Look up bike trails in your area by Googling them. Have a great ride everyone! :)
aschram13_75060 over 2 years ago
I cannot ride a bicycle anymore (my wife is at a health stage at which I need to be close by her at all times). However, I did my share: for 30 years, I rode my bicycle to work (3 miles each way, with a steep hill), rain or shine.
ratwerks over 2 years ago
The thing for me is riding my bicycle (like I did today) does not really offset much because my alternative to the bicycle is an all electric motorcycle (which I charge from solar panels.) Just sayin'
dave_63110 over 2 years ago
So, I ride my bike to work every day. Even with snow, ice, etc., I think I've driven to work maybe five times in the last six months or so. Honestly, I drive so little, that it's hard to keep track. And it's not like I live in Portland. Round trip is about 13.5 miles in St. Louis, MO. I've even evangelized bike commuting in the office. Some days we have about 10% of the work force, or 4-5 people bike commuting. If I can do it, you can, too!
